Are you being mislead by "ergonomic" ads?
In a journey to BE & STAY PAIN FREE we are often attracted to the world of "ergonomics" with it's promise of health, happiness, and productivity!
The plethora of "ergonomic" products available on the market today can be overwhelming and very confusing on how to make a WISE investment.
An ergonomic consultant can help you by recommending a product that is a good fit for you.
1st things FIRST: What is Ergonomics?
Ergonomics is....."the overall organization and design of the job tasks, tools, equipment, and workplace workplace layout of the work to fit the job to the person rather than the person to the job"
Sounds nice right?
Simply put ergonomics makes things move and bend to fit you rather than you working in awkward posture to fit the environment.
So what got me worked up and is not ergonomic about the picture at the top of this blog?
Ergo Problem #1.
Working on a laptop (i.e. the "DEVIL"S CHILD in ergonomics) is very hard on your posture ;from your head to your butt and everything in between. That is due to the fact that good posture can never be achieved working on laptop. Just check out the picture below.
1.Purchase a detachable keyboard/mouse that you can pull close to you so you elbows are in line with the sides of your body( this opens up your shoulders).
2. Raise your laptop onto an adjustable monitor stand (or on top of books) so the top 1/3 of the screen is just below eye level.
Ergo Problem #2.
Body Education- The leg posture (in the picture at the top of the blog) above over time could lead to unbalanced hips and lower back pain.
1. Stand with your weight evenly on both feet
2. Add in healthy movement throughout the day while standing. ex. raise up onto all 10 toes evenly 10x's every 15 minutes or circle you pelvis 10x's in each direction. This will also have the added benefit of spicing up your dance moves!
-FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT
-HEALTH BENEFITS (like improved metabolism & decreased risk for disease)
-PAIN RELIEF OR PREVENTION
